The title in the fifth of the series evoked by memories of my mother refers to any or all of these: kindling for the coal stove, coal, vegetables, eggs, or obviously, the washing.

In this, five kids in a small house and our mother's need to preserve some shreds of sanity. We had plenty of space outside, trees, lawn, wild paddocks over the fence, an old orchard full of lichen covered apple and pear trees, chooks, swamps and creeks. And Westerns, known to us as cowboys and Indians fuelling hours of shooting, wounding or killing with clothes peg guns. It wasn't difficult to play outside. (Political analysis of the movies came later. Boom)

Always Plant In The Rain

Living under Mt. Taranaki there was always plenty of rain. In the spring my mother would cover herself with something resembling a raincoat, and go out in the drizzle to plant a couple of dozen snap dragons or runanculae and anemone.

I have a clear memory, or an accumulation of memories of standing in the doorway watching my mother apply lipstick at the mirror, which I feel now as a kind of enchantment.
