I paint because words are not enough. The works express my feelings about Parihaka as an idea, and a pivotal historical chain of events; a deep sense of place: Taranaki, under the mountain, and what it meant and has come to mean.  Also the sense that we, in Aotearoa-NZ need to resist peacefully again. Joyful rage.
Picture
Parihaka I, for me is about three men: Te Whiti Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi, who brought people in with their philosophy of non-violent resistance, and Riwha Titokowaru, the one who personally took that philosophy out to the iwi of Taranaki.

Parihaka II expresses the joy of affinity, of community, of shared purpose, of abundance, prosperity.
Parihaka III is the sorrow and pain of desecration, scattering of people, breaking up of community, incarceration and death: he mamae.
Parihaka IV is renaissance, the phoenix-like nature of good values, and hope for the future. Defiant, joyful sovereignty.
