These works were created immediately after finishing my
extended Parihaka series -
at Kina Gallery, New Plymouth until 12 February.
That series is made up of symbolic shapes
and strong colours
representing the four dominant moods
I wanted to express.
The ‘Ihlara’ series of five pieces are lighter in colour and feel:
open and flowing, celebrating the beauty of the valley
of the same name in Kapadokya, Turkey.
I walked in the valley, 15 years ago, in April.
The tourist season hadn’t begun;
there were few people about,
and the large rocks, some as big as houses,
tumbled into my memory,
much as they seemed still to be in movement
though they were quite still.
The trees were lightly-leaved slender chartreuse.
Acqua and Transcience bounced off the feeling of the
inland enclosed landscape of the Ihlara valley,
with its quiet little river running through it.
