In 2013 I took a trip from Milano, where I was on an extended holiday, to Athens and then a couple of island hops to Bodrum in Turkey. From the wharf I hopped on a bus to Antalya, or more especially its old heart around the beautiful harbour, Kaleici. My final objective, heading east, was Gobeklitepe, the oldest monument currently known to us. It's twice the age of the pyramids; and in old Mesopotamia, near the Turkish city of Sanliurfa. From the Acroplis to Gobeklitepe the ancient stones are mesmerising, whether the monuments are more or less intact, or more or less in ruins, or still subject to major archaeological digging.
The photo was taken in Athens.
