2026 ANZAC Day Painting I
Acrylic paint on loose canvas

In recent years I have painted one or two pieces on or near ANZAC Day. This one was inspired by reflections of the cultural significance of the Day in my childhood. Poppies, the war memorial which stands i from of a car park on the walk to the tow swimming pool, the baths. On the Day, my sister and I put on our best dresses, walked to the opera house, sat up in the gods to listen to old men telling war stories. I didn't understand a word of it.

Many years ago I stepped out of a party at the surf club in New Plymouth to look at and listen to the ocean, with the light from the party behind me. I took a couple of photos which have been lurking in my imagination since then. Finally, the paintings got their turn.

I'm starting my art year collaborating with The Department of Curiosities and Fine Things in Hastings Street Napier, where I'm showing Parihaka and climate emergency themed paintings, and numerous small and medium sized canvases, works on paper that are ready to drop into a frame, and greeting cards.

This cash and carry mini exhibition is up for the month of February. At the same time, I have started preparing for a solo show at the Lysaght Watt Gallery, Hawera in March 2027. In between now and then, my three week residency at Chateau d'Orquevaux, France starts at the end of September.
